Difficulty

This is a picture of empty junk food rappers and bags. It represents appetite, and how man succumbs to his appetite, and, therefore, lets it control him. The text revolves around the idea of freedom, how our freedoms have changed since man lived in the wild (Jacques-Rousseau). So, before the evolution of man, he was only controlled by his appetite and his wants and his needs (Jacques-Rousseau). Now, he is supposedly able to control those same wants and needs through self-imposed laws, but is controlled by others (Jacques-Rousseau). I think that this idea is both right and wrong because man does often let himself be controlled by others and has yet to gain control over his appetite. The purpose of the picture is to emphasize the latter, and it isn't the only example. We always hear new statistics about sex addiction, STD's, unplanned pregnancies, obesity, nicotine addiction, marijuana smoking, drug addiction, peer pressure, and so many more. And I think this emphasizes Jean Jacques-Rousseau's point when he says "Man is born free, and everywhere he is in chains". So man thinks he is in control, but he is, in fact, controlled by everything around him (Jacques-Rousseau).
