“The Revolution Will Not Be Polite: The Issue of Nice Versus Good Summary"

The coalesce of goodness and niceness is a big problem. Everyday people commit acts of oppression disguised as niceness. A lot of nice people do oppressive things to others, as the author stated, in order to let others’ guards down. Another issue is that some people misunderstand social justice to be about niceness. These people have misapprehended the meaning of privilege. Privilege means giving groups of people different rights and opportunities based on laws, and socio-cultural norms. Mixing nice with good also creates a way of controlling marginalised people because what is deemed as nice is often culture dependant and defined by the dominant group. Moreover, the author believes that the mix-up of meanness and oppression is why oppression is thought to be about hurting someone’s feelings. In reality, oppression is about the rights and opportunities not given to a certain group of people. Towards the end the author clearly states that being good and being nice are not related. This social movement addressed by the author can not accomplish it’s objectives if people think of it as a revolution of niceness. Social justice is about retrieving the rights and opportunities turned down to people by law, and not about making a nicer place out of the world.

  1. Check moodle for your grade. Your main idea is too broad. Your idea about letting ones guard down is incorrect. It's not in the text. Good ending.
