“Brand Malala” response prep

In the article “Brand Malala” : Western Exploitation of a Schoolgirl, Carol Anne Grayson discusses how Malala Yousafzai has been a victim of Western exploitation and how social justice and equality has not been properly attained in the United Kingdom. This article along other articles can be studied from five main perspectives; the social, emotional, rhetorical, logical and ethical   perspectives as will be explained below.

Firstly, the social perspective portrays the linkage of the article to the society; how it affects or influences society. In this article, Carol Anne Grayson addresses two main conflicts our society is facing nowadays; Women who are victimized shouldn’t be subjected to any kind of exploitation, and that gender justice should be attained in all societies. In the text, Grayson stated that “Malala has become a very Marketable Western Commodity”, and on the issue of gender justice Grayson emphasized the lack of attention the press has upon the lack of gender justice in the UK and other countries. Additionally, Grayson described the former Prime Minister a “Misogynist”.

Secondly, from the emotional perspective we can indicate the tone and diction of the writers text. Grayson uses her angry tone about exploitation to emphasize that there are thousands of women who are being victimized everyday and are being unnoticed in comparison to the exploitation of Malalas incident and Malala as a Western commodity; “ This does not help the cause of any woman while one is exploited and others are being suppressed.” Carol Anne Grayson uses the word “misogynist” to affirm the lack of gender justice in the United Kingdom. Grayson also uses “good west versus bad east” and “rescuing women from the east” to indicate how the West exploits incidents and victims of the East to portray a good image of the Western civilization as the peaceful saviors.

And third, the rhetorical perspective covers the type of text at hand; Carol Anne Grayson wrote an argumentative text. In the text she emphasized her opinion on the Western ways of exploiting innocent victims, and also her emphasis on gender equality. Grayson used long sentences, repetition of ideas (western exploitation and gender justice), and denotation “misogynist” to further elaborate and stress on the ideas being discussed in her text.

Last but not least comes the logical perspective, Carol Anne Grayson used the inductive method in her text; she started off with the example of Malala and then generalized to stress on her deep objection to exploiting victimized women and using some of them as a “Western Commodity”, additionally her use of the inductive method was to open the audience eyes on the lack of assistance the Western countries fail to offer all victimized women.

And finally comes the ethical perspective. It is highly important to emphasize what ethical background is behind the text written by Grayson. In the fast changing world we live in today, Human Rights interfered as an anchor to equality and the rights of every human being regardless of gender, race, or ethnicity. Carol Anne Grayson stressed on the value and importance of human beings. Grayson also refused the use of humans as commodities for a certain interest of the sovereign. Additionally she emphasized on the actualization of gender equality. For in the absence of equality, and human rights chaos will prevail in societies and the sovereign will dominate the weak.
