Author Rachael tries to clarify in this text that nice and
good do not correspond to the same thing. Rachael first talks about an
imperfect post on Tumblr that lists non-oppressive insults, and states that
many people actually appreciated this post. On the other hand many people
disagreed with this post saying that it did was not being consistent with the
concept of social justice. Rachael points that these people are wrong and that
social justice doesn’t have to be nice. Social justice is then defined saying
that it basically is about eradicating privileges and marginalization, and is
not synonym to niceness. As well, it is being said that niceness doesn’t equate
to good as some people can be doing offensive things but in a polite and nice
manner. Additionally, niceness can be used by one as a tool to perform really
bad things on another, as people have been taught that niceness indicates
goodness and therefore signs of niceness definitely implicate something good.
Niceness of acts is therefore not reliable to judge whether an act is good or
not. Rachael adds that misapprehension of privilege is the cause of people
thinking that social justice should be nice, defining both privilege (Exclusive
advantages given to a specific social group) and marginalization (deprivation of
many sides of the exterior life). She points that TV shows boost social roles,
and therefore are a social justice issue. Manners, being established by dominant
classes according to what they perceive as nice (which isn’t so nice to people
that they oppress), indicate why conflation of nice and good creates some kind
of domination towards the less privileged people. As well, meanness and
oppression do not indicate the same thing. Taking away the rights of someone
because of the minority group he belongs to (oppression) is not the same as
simply cursing someone (meanness). The text is wrapped up by saying that it is
needed to separate nice from good because each term means something, and if we
do not, then oppressors are still going to dominate over others. Social justice
is finally about giving equal rights and opportunities to everybody.
Check moodle for your grade. The main idea is too broad. Don't include too specific ideas. You have fragments in the summary work on grammar. The writing center can help. Good summary though.
